The Spies Who Loved Folkestone
BBC WW1 DOCUMENTARY - STYLIZED DIGITAL ARTWORK
The Director wanted to recreate scenes from several written accounts of those who were employed by the British to gather intel on the Nazis during World War II. With no access to photographs or archive film footage of these covert activities, due to the secret nature of operations, I was tasked with recreating the world of the spies and living characters to inhabit it. The brief for this project was to use an illustrative style with a degree of realism. As a reference for this, the Director had seen my work on a previous feature film project set in World War I and asked for a similar style for this documentary.
After agreeing the shots and camera movements we wanted, I set about creating the digital artwork. I used the footage of actors (shot against green scene) as a basis. I then worked up each environment with numerous layers to be animated by the After Effects artist in post-production.
